i Mr. Schick! Well, today was the very last day, of the very
first week of school, and so far, I just wanted to say that I am really
enjoying your class! I love learning about Socrates and hearing how passionate
you are about teaching it to us really makes me feel like this is going to be a
good year! The message to Garcia was enjoyable to listen to, and I think I got
the message that you were trying to get across, so that’s pretty good! I cannot
wait to continue this class!
Essay #1. To me arete means to have a good and honest
character and to have a clean soul and a good meaning in life. This pretty much
describes Socrates perfectly. This man walked the streets talking and teaching
to anyone that would come up to him, and when he was sentenced to death for
something he didn’t do he decided he wasn’t going to say he was guilty when he
wasn’t so he took the poison and died.
Most people in Greece were like that and were understanding, but some
people were not as possessing of arĂȘte.
Essay #2. I think
that if Elbert Hubbard and Socrates came back to present day, they would be
shocked! They couldn’t walk down the road these days! People would just mow
them down! There is so much technology, I mean, phones! They would be amazed
that we can talk to people all over the world, just by talking into a box and a
skinny wire carries millions of peoples voices all over. I don’t think they would
like it very much to be honest. Life is so different nowadays and people like
Elbert and Socrates can’t do what they were able to do thousands of years ago.
Essay #3. When I think about my excellence achieving plan
for John Carroll, I have it strong set in my mind.
1.
Time and place. When it is time to focus on
school, focus on school, but on the sports field or stage, focus your mind on
that.
2.
Set an academic goal, and work as hard as you
can to achieve it.
3.
Make the John Carroll girls lacrosse team
4.
Get all A’s and a few B’s
5.
Make it into a D-1 lacrosse college
#1: 24/25 (A). I like your essay - just wish you had tied it in with democracy and the Greek idea of citizenship.
ReplyDelete#2: 21/25 (B). I was looking more at these men and their reaction to the human condition - what would they think about how people act in modern times.
#3: 23/25 (A). Good goals, although a little explanation would have been helpful.
